School Mascot Design,
Athletic Logo Design & Spirit Marks
Visual identity that lives on the court, the field, and in the hallways. We design mascots, athletic marks, and custom character systems that give your school something worth rallying behind.
Built to be worn, cheered, and remembered.
A great school mascot is more than a logo. It is a symbol your community claims as their own: something students wear with pride, alumni recognize instantly, and prospective families notice before they read a single word. At Ovus Ater, we design mascots and athletic identities with the same strategic rigor we bring to every brand engagement. The result is work that looks great on a gym floor and holds up twenty years later.
We work exclusively with independent schools, so we understand the particular challenge of designing something that speaks to an eight-year-old and a high school senior in the same breath. Fierce enough for competition, warm enough for community.
Services
Mascot Design
We design original school mascots and mascot redesigns built to work across every application, from center court to spirit wear, folding chairs to social media. Every mascot we create is a full design system: primary mark, alternate versions, lockup options, and usage guidance that ensures your mascot looks intentional wherever it appears.
We approach mascot design as both a brand and a community question. Who does this mascot need to speak to? What does it need to convey? How does it balance energy and approachability, tradition and freshness? The answers shape every design decision.
Athletic Logo Design
Beyond the mascot, a complete athletic identity includes the full system of marks that travel with your teams: primary athletic logos, alternate marks, wordmarks, crests, and the guidelines that keep everything consistent. We design athletic identity systems that hold together whether they are on a uniform, a banner, a scoreboard, or a social media post.
Athletic logo design can be a standalone engagement or part of a broader mascot and identity project. Either way, the goal is the same: a cohesive visual system your school is proud to put its name behind.
Spirit Marks: Custom Mascot Characters for Schools
Spirit Marks are custom illustrated mascot characters designed to keep your school's identity alive in the everyday life of your community. Where your primary mascot is built for competition and formal applications, Spirit Marks are built for connection: warmth, personality, and the kind of charm that makes a sticker worth collecting or a banner worth hanging.
They are a retention tool as much as a design deliverable. The right Spirit Mark shows up at admitted student events, travels home on water bottles, gets requested by every sports team, and makes prospective families feel something before they ever set foot on campus.
Athletics Communications Design
Once the identity is in place, the work of keeping it alive begins. We design the ongoing communications assets that make your athletics program look as strong on social media as it does on the field: game-day graphics, season announcements, senior recognition posts, spirit week content, and the full range of materials that give your community something to share and celebrate throughout the year.
For schools with an active Spirit Marks program, these assets extend your mascot characters into the rhythm of the school year, creating a consistent, recognizable visual presence that builds community across every season.
Mascot Design: Marymount School of New York
Marymount had the Lion in name but not in mark. Their athletics had long been anchored by an "M": functional, but missing the spirit and visual identity a N-12 school deserves. The challenge was to bring the Lion to life in a way that could speak to every division, warm enough for a Lower School student to love, strong enough to hold its own in high school competition.
The result is a full-body lion mark. Fierce but friendly, built for versatility. Delivered with lockup options for "Marymount Lions," "Lion Pride," and the legacy "M," the system works equally well at center court, on the sideline, on merchandise, and on folding chairs at game time. It is the kind of mascot a school grows into rather than out of.
Mascot Design: A School in Transition (Name Withheld)
When a school decides to retire a mascot that no longer reflects its values, the replacement carries real weight. It has to honor the community's history while opening the door to something more inclusive, and it has to resonate with alumni who still identify with what came before.
For this engagement, the challenge was designing a new mascot that felt strong and competitive without skewing masculine, and contemporary without feeling unfamiliar. The brief was clear: a mark that everyone in the community could claim as their own. The knight we designed threads that needle, grounded in tradition, deliberate in its inclusivity, and built to last.
Spirit Marks: St. Francis Preparatory School, Fresh Meadows, NY
What began as a community-building initiative became a full creative system. For St. Francis Prep, we developed a complete line of Spirit Marks that now spans every sport, every academic department, and the full calendar year, including seasonal and holiday editions. The line has become a signature part of how the school celebrates its community, from High School Night for prospective students to current athletes who request their sport's character for gear and social posts.
We also produce Senior Athlete Banners for St. Francis Prep at the close of each athletic season. Personalized banners for Senior Day and Senior Night. They are the kind of touchpoint that families keep long after the season ends.
Spirit Marks: Academy of Our Lady, New Orleans, LA
For Academy of Our Lady, we designed Spirit Marks for the school's athletic teams and its signature academic programs, giving the school a visual language that honors both competition and scholarship. Each character is rooted in the school's identity while carrying the warmth and personality that makes Spirit Marks worth sharing.
